Drawings are an important part of engineering courses. But most students find it difficult to complete the drawing assignments. So, four such students from Nashik took it as a challenge to make a machine which is capable of doing drawing and successfully completed the project recently.
Second year students of Mahaveer polytechnic college have developed a vertical numerical machine which is capable of making drawing on a 5 cm x 5 cm paper with pen or pencil in just 20 seconds. The students have used the easily available material at their college, mainly electric waste, to make the machine. This is not a new innovation but a concept project. But, it is worth appreciable as students of second year diploma have made it without any assistance from experts.
How it works?
- First, you have to click a photo of the drawing which is to be printed.
- The photo gets converted into G-code with the use of GRBL coding.
[G-code, which has many variants, is the common name for the most widely used numerical control (NC) programming language. Because it’s a computer aided machine, so it is used to control automated machine tools. And GRBL is a free, open source, high performance software for controlling the motion of machines that move, that make things, or that make things move.]
- The coding is processing by using a processing ID.
- Micro-controllers send the code to the motors fixed to the machine.
- The motor execute the work following the messages by running X, Y and Z axis. Either pen or pencil can be fixed to the machine.
Due to their innovative thinking, they won first prize in the project competition at the Engineering Management Fest 2017 held at Mumbai Education Trust.
The boys have used GRBL coding, and Arduino Uno microprocessor for the project. In fact, this has come out of our laziness. Every engineering student finds it difficult to complete the drawing assignments and dreams about a machine which could work with our own pen or pencil. This machine serves the purpose and makes a perfect drawing.
A team member said,” The advanced version of this machine may be used 3D printing, drilling, cutting laser head and for other purposes.”
